Training and Certification
What is NDT?

Non-Destructive Testing is a specialized branch of Engineering Science, which uses Ionizing Radiation, Ultrasonic Sound Waves, Magnetic Flux etc. to test the integrity of casting, forging welding etc. without impairing its usefulness.

Radiographic Testing, Ultrasonic Testing, Magnetic Particle Testing, Penetrant Testing, Visual Testing, Eddy Current Testing, Leak Testing, Infrared Thermography, Vibration Analysis, Neutron Radiography and Acoustic Emission are the recognized NDT methods.

To whom NDT?

Mechanical, Production and Automobile Engineers whoever is interested to develop their carrier as a QA / QC Engineer / Inspector require knowledge in relevant NDT methods. In addition to that NDT Technicians also require NDT qualification.

With the emerging new technologies and globalization in India, NDT has become an integral part of all design, construction, fabrication, installation and maintenance. A fresh Mechanical / Production / Automobile engineering graduate always needs a specialization before he gets his job assignment as specialist in a particular department.

Design Engineer requires Expertise in CAD
Production engineer requires Expertise in CNC
QA / QC Engineer requires Expertise in NDT

In recent years, Training and Certification in Non-Destructive Testing has produced best-specialized QA/QC engineers. Personnel, thus trained, have got opportunities to work in Gulf, Far East, South East and Western countries.

An S.S.L.C. / 10th passed candidate also has good job opportunity upon successful completion of NDT raining and certification as NDT technician which has good demand in gulf sector.

Moreover present global recession and financial crisis leads to loss of employment in all sectors is being discussed everywhere and require us to be highly competitive in our profession to keep our placement.  Accordingly we need to boost our qualifications, eligibility, skills etc. to find a suitable placement.  Non Destructive Testing (NDT - ASNT Level II) certification is such a course for Mechanical / Production / Design Engineers to enhance eligibility to find a placement as QA/QC Engineer.

Why NDT Qualification?
A fresh Mechanical / Production / Automobile engineering graduate always needs a specialization before he gets his / her job assignment as specialist in a particular department, because he / she has to work in accordance with International Quality Standards such as:

  • American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME Standards)
  • American Petroleum Institute (API Standards)
  • American Welding Society (AWS Standards)
  • American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM Standards)
  • National Aerospace Standards (NAS Standards)
  • American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI Standards)
  • American National Standards Institute (ANSI Standards)
  • Military Standards (MIL STD)
  • European National Standard
  • American Society for Non Destructive Testing (ASNT)
Hence engineers should be capable to follow these standards during design, construction, fabrication, installation and maintenance of projects. ASNT Level II is considered as basic qualification for NDT activities in the project.

Where NDT?

NDT is normally applied during construction, operations and maintenance of projects such as Oil and Natural Gas RIG, Gas Oil Separation Plant (GOSP), Refinery, Pipelines, Power Plant, Ship Building, Chemical Plants, Fertilizers, Automobile, Nuclear Plants, Aerospace, Steel Plants etc.

NDT Responsibilities of QC Engineer in Project
Coordination of NDT activities in the project: QC Engineer is the person responsible to control NDT in the project. Normally NDT is performed by technicians of NDT subcontractor and they are working as per the direction of project QC.

Hence QC would require to prepare NDT request, (selection of components for NDT as per applicable standard), selection of suitable NDT method, ararrange radiography work permit, locate and identify joints for NDT, arrange for lighting and scaffolding etc.

Witness NDT: QC Engineer has responsibility to witness ultrasonic testing, penetrant testing, magnetic particle testing etc. at job site while technician performs NDT.

Radiographic Test Film Interpretation: In the case of radiographic testing QC is responsible to interpret (RTFI) radiography film.

Review of NDT Reports: QC Engineer is responsible to review NDT reports prepared by NDT technician.

Documentation: QC Engineer is responsible to maintain test results of NDT in the project.

Training and Certification:
  • Accordingly, Metalscan Inspection Services extends our support for fresh Mechanical, Production and Automobile Engineers whoever is interested to develop their carrier as a QA / QC Engineer / Inspector. Being a service organization for Non-Destructive Testing in engineering industry we provide specialized training and certification of Non-Destructive Testing. We normally offer training on:

  • Radiographic Testing (RT)
  • Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
  • Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
  • Penetrant Testing (PT)
  • Visual Testing (VT)
  • Eddy Current Testing (ET)
  • Leak Testing (LT)

  • We issue ASNT level I or Level II certificates upon successful completion of training which is recognized all over the world. We also provide training and certification on National Aerospace Standard (NAS410) and European National Standard (EN473).

  • At present we have training facilities in Kochin and Kozhikode .

How training in METALSCAN differs?
  • Faculties in metalscan is highly qualified and well experienced (India and Abroad). Being a servicing company we keep latest equipment for pracicals.  We use specially developed software for NDT training.  Training notes for each NDT methods are available in CDs which consists of detailed notes on every topic with flash animations, worked out problems, quiz etc.  LCD projectors are used for presentation during training.

    Our faculties include:
  • ASNT Level III / NAS 410 Level III,
  • Radiation Safety classes handled by BARC certified RSO/Site-In-Charge.
  • Welding Defects: Certified Welding Inspector (AWS – CWI)
  • Overseas experienced faculty (Conversant in ASME, API & AWS Standards)

Radiographic Testing (RT):

Radiographic testing uses highly penetrating invisible electromagnetic radiations (X-ray or γ-ray) for testing.  Please note that over exposure of these radiations to human body is harmful hence proper safety training is very important.  Usage of these radiation sources in India is regulated by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).  BARC certified rather licensed professionals ( RSO / Site-in-charge / Radiographer license) are allowed to operate these sources.

Similarly KACST ( King Abdul-Aziz City for Science and Technology) is the regulatory authority in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and technicians wish to work in Saudi ARAMCO or SABIC should be capable to follow their regulation.

Since Metalscan Inspection Services is a BARC approved organization with qualified professionals, we assure that candidates will get proper training in radiographic testing. Our faculty for radiation safety include Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) and Site-in-Charge from BARC (qualified from KACSTalso).

Radiographic Test Film Interpretation (RTFI) is another important segment in RT training.  Accuracy of film interpretation is knowledge and experience.  A film interpreter should have sound knowledge about welding and casting process to interpret defects in it.  RTFI training in Metalscan is very effective since training on welding defects will be handled by  qualified welding inspector (AWS-CWI) and  Interpretation will be guided by Saudi Aramco certified RTFI.

NB:  We keep hundreds of radiographs for RTFI practice.

Ultrasonic Testing (UT):
Ultrasonic testing uses ultrasound waves (greater than 20,000 Hz) to check integrity of materials.  Sound waves are transmitted into the material and reflections have to be analyzed for defects.  Accuracy of ultrasonic testing is purely ability of technician which acquires from knowledge and experience.  We have highly qualified and well experienced ( and abroad) faculties for training.
  • We give training on:

  • Thickness / Dimension measurement
  • Lamination Checking
  • Corrosion Scanning
  • Weld Scanning

NB: We keep digital and analogue UT equipment for training.

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT):
Magnetic Particle Testing uses magnetic flux into the ferromagnetic material being tested and indications are observed after application of magnetic powder.  Surface and sub-surface defects can be identified using this method.   There are different types of magnetic particle testing equipment and we provide training on below equipment:

  • DC and AC Electromagnet (Yoke)
  • Prodes
  • Bench Type Equipment

NB: Both visible and fluorescent testing facility is available.

Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT):
Liquid Penetrant Testing applies principle of capillarity for detection of surface breaking defects.

NB: Both visible and fluorescent testing facility is available.

In addition to above class room training we arrange for ON JOB TRAINING at Chennai.
